Breastfeeding TipsAt OB/GYN Associates we are committed to helping our patients achieve their breastfeeding goals. Breastfeeding can have many benefits for infants, but many people do not realize the benefits for the mother as well. These include a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancer as well as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Breastfeeding can be a challenging endeavor but there are many resources to be aware of prior to delivery that can help with breastfeeding success!

Many insurance companies will cover the cost of a breast pump and a pump can often be obtained prior to delivery. Even better, there are companies that will ship a breast pump directly to you! An example of such companies is Aeroflow Breastpumps which has worked for many of our patients. Otherwise, ask one of our providers for a breast pump prescription that can be taken to a medical supply store to be filled.

If you will be pumping to provide milk for your baby, milk storage guidelines can be confusing! Milk can be stored for different lengths of time depending on the temperature. The CDC has a helpful chart (https://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/recommendations/handling_breastmilk.htm) that can be printed for reference. Keep in mind these guidelines apply to full term, healthy newborns. Please consult with your pediatrician if your baby is premature or has health conditions that may require a change from standard recommendations.

Women who deliver their baby at MercyOne have lactation support that is provided throughout their breastfeeding journey. Check out the website for full details (https://www.mercyone.org/desmoines/find-a-service-or-specialty/pregnancy-and-maternity-care/during-your-stay/lactation-support). After discharge from the hospital, women can set up an appointment to meet with a certified lactation consultant if additional support is needed.

Please ask any additional questions about breastfeeding at your next prenatal or postpartum appointment. Our providers are happy to help!

We are accepting new patients! To schedule an appointment with OBGYN Associates, call us at 515-288-3287.
